Santorini

The island with one of the most beautiful sunsets in the world is 128 km from Athens. The official name of the island is Thira. Santorini (Santa Irini) was called by the Frank crusaders.

In the prehistoric times, the island was round but due to a volcanic explosion, the western part sunk. Its famous volcano is still active with its last activation in 1950.

The island along with the other Cyclades was occupied by the Venetians and the Ottomans.

Santorini is dry and without waters but that the produce of the island is especially tasteful. The famous wine, tomatoes, melons, and many others are considered unique. 

Τhe island is 77 km2 and nowadays has a population of approx. 15.000. The capital of the island is Fira.

Many religious festivals take place, especially in the summer. For sure you’ll enjoy the food, the dance, and the wine during one of those festivals. Easter traditions are also a must-see if you visit Santorini at that time.

You can also enjoy windsurfing and kitesurf, diving, trekking, horse riding, cycling, etc.

Make sure you have a drink at Oia and watch the sunset or the full moon.
