Leipsoi

What do you know about the island of the Greek goddess Calypso? If not much then this is the perfect time not only to read a little about it but also to include it in your destinations and visit it yourselves.

Leipsoi is a very small island in the Dodecanese surrounded by 24 smaller islands all of them included in the Natura 2000 network.

As we mentioned the island is quite small there is one main settlement and that is the capital of the island. There are some other settlements on the island but there are no permanent residents there. Although, during the summer months they are more than beautiful and they are definitely worth a visit.

We would suggest going to Kouselio, Katsadia and Platis Gialos. The capital, called Chora, is the perfect representation of a picturesque Dodecanese island. Its white houses with their light blue windows and doors, the narrow streets, the traditional bakeries, and the souvenir shops will leave you mesmerized.

If you are up for some hiking then you can see the rare beauty of the island for yourselves and be surrounded by ravines, verdant plaints, and small forests of cedars, smell the fresh oregano, thyme, sea lilies, olive trees fig trees, and vineyards. After all, it is the island that a Goddess chose to settle in, so you can expect nothing less than extraordinary beauty.

If you are ready for a dive to some of the best beaches you will ever visit then let us give you some suggestions. Below is our list of the ones we think you should try and visit:

  • Lientou
  • Platis Gialos
  • Monodendri
  • Xirokampos
  • Kampos
  • Tourkonima
  • Katsadia

Since you do have a private boat available, explore the neighboring islands where you will find once more crystal blue waters amazing beaches and sceneries you will never forget.

The island is very well known for the hospitality of the locals and the amazing food. So please do yourselves a favor and try the local cuisine. It is based on fresh products. Try pitaroudia, favokeftedes, and squid filled with rice. Try any dish with fresh fish and seafood. The most famous sweet recipe is xerotigano with honey, cinnamon, and walnut.

We are sure that you will not be disappointed by either the food or the beauty of the island.
